Q. Because they were eye witnesses to the crime, Amy, Sue and Jack were called to testify at the robbery hearing.

a) Amy, Sue and Jack were called to testify at the robbery hearing
b) Amy, Sue and Jack they were called to testify at the robbery hearing
c) Amy, Sue and Jack was called to testify at the robbery hearing
d) Amy, Sue and Jack were calling to testify at the robbery hearing
e) Amy, Sue and Jack were called to testifying at the robbery hearing

I know this is an easy question. But the problem is that I am not able to identify the rules governing the correct option. For example in the above question I know that the answer to the above question is A. But between A and E, I don't know why E is incorrect. As of now even after completing the basic level of ultimate grammar book, I am not able to identify the correct tense and exact error in the sentence.
Also any advice on how should I take my preparation forward would be appreciated.
Here you need infinitive of purpose. and infinitive of purose is always written in the form of "to+ verb in the base form
so the use of to + ving ( participle is wrong.

here they were called and the puropse of calling to testify. so we need infinitive of purpose
