Hello, luke2021,

We hope this finds you well.

Your analysis is largely correct, but we would like to offer one important point of clarity.
Modifying phrases that begin with a present participle ("verb+ing") CAN be used at the beginning of a sentence, so long as the phrase accurately modifies the following noun.

For example: "Jogging in the park, John lost his wallet."

The usage of the present participle is correct here because "Jogging in the park" can logically modify "John". The modifying error seen in this question is that "Comparing..." cannot logically modify "the Klondike Gold Rush", as the gold rush cannot be said to take the action of making a comparison.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
