Those watching the libel suit might speculate if the company, swift to take offense might have been as responsible for the perceived slander as the newspaper was.

Choce E is correct

(A) speculate if the company, swift to take offense might have been(comma omitted between modifier and verb)

(B) speculate if the company, swift to take offense had been (comma omitted between modifier and verb)

(C) speculate if, in its swiftness to take offense the company was

(D) wonder as to whether, in its swiftness to take offense, the company was

(E) wonder whether the company, swift to take offense, was( correct use of weather and correct modification)

i would appreciate if someone corrects me for my mistakes.

Thanks

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

Should you use ‘whether’ or ‘if’? There are two alternatives. Either the company was as responsible as the newspaper, or it was not. When there two alternatives it is better to use ‘whether’. Eliminate A, B and C. E is shorter and more efficient than D. Choice E is the correct answer.
