Recent surveys indicate that an increasing number of commuters have chosen to take public transportation rather than driving to work in the gridlock of city traffic.

(A) have chosen to take public transportation rather than driving(driving is not parallel to to take)

(B) have chosen taking public transportation rather than to drive( taking is not parallel to to drive)

(C) choose to take public transportation rather than to drive ( correct parallelism is maintained)

(D) choose to take public transportation rather than driving( to take is not parallel to driving)

(E) choose to take public transportation instead of driving ( same as in D, Rather than is preferable to instead of)

Will go with choice C.

IMO Option C is correct as it maintains parallelism in its tenses.

X rather than Y is correct form.

X and Y should be parallel. Only option C has this parallelism.

Also instead is used when we are talking in terms of Replace.

Here instead does not make sense.

IMO C. All other choices have faulty parallelism error.

The subject is not "commuters" but "the increasing number of commuters", so there is a singular subject. We can rule out A and B because of subject-verb agreement.

We have to respect the parallelism. Chose to take public transportation rather than to drive
This rules out D and E
C is the correct one.

(C) choose to take public transportation rather than to drive

Official Explanation :

The underlined portion contains an incorrect comparison: to take is not parallel to driving, so eliminate (A), as well as (D), and (E), which repeat the error.

Choice (B) is also not correct: to drive is not parallel to taking.

Using take and drive makes the sentence parallel, so the correct answer is (C).

As far as I know and remember from one of the generis post, rather than is not followed by "to" since the second case is hypothetical and requires bare infinitive. Can someone correct me if I am wrong here?

Hi iamdivs,

Using a to after rather than is not impossible. Here is an example:
The briefing was used to mislead members of the public rather than to help them understand the severity of the situation.

Option C is the correct answer. Other options have a parallelism problem as identified above.
