Hi,

Can please someone explain why it's not B?

Thanks

Posted from my mobile device
B is incorrect because Mar is compared with the surface of Earth. The correct comparision must be the surface of Mar and the surface of earth. Or Mar and Earth, etc.

Unlike Mars, the surface of Earth is primarily water, with landmass making up less than half of the total area.

Analysis :

1. "the surface of Earth" is in active voice and "Earth's surface" is in passive voice, but they both mean the same thing.

A and B are wrong as both are comparing "Mars" with "the surface of Earth"

Option D compares "Mars" with "Water" - Eliminate

Option E awkwardly compares "something that of Mars with a clause "Earth has....". Eliminate.

Only Option B makes sense.

B says, Unlike the surface of Mars, that (the surface) of Earth......

A - Mars, the surface of Earth is primarily water

B - Mars, Earth's surface is primarily water

C - the surface of Mars, that of Earth is primarily water

D - Mars, water is primarily Earth's surface

E - that of Mars, Earth has a surface that is primarily water

Unlike Mars, the surface of Earth is primarily water, with landmass making up less than half of the total area.

A - Mars, the surface of Earth is primarily water
- has a comparison error: makes ''mars'' to ''surface (of earth)'' comparison
B - Mars, Earth's surface is primarily water - has a comparison error: makes ''mars'' to ''surface (of earth)'' comparison
C - the surface of Mars, that of Earth is primarily water - does not have any error. Hence, (C) is the right answer choice.
D - Mars, water is primarily Earth's surface - has a comparison error: makes ''mars'' to ''water'' comparison
E - that of Mars, Earth has a surface that is primarily water - we do not know what ''that'' of Mars refers to
