"Instead of" means substitution/replacement, which is not the meaning of this sentence.

B) and ensures a plant that is genetically identical to the original but does not produce a random hybrid of two trees, as is done in natural pollination
As what "is done"....the genetically identical plant or the hybrid?

C) ensuring a plant that is genetically identical to the original and not producing a random hybrid of two trees, as in natural pollination
"Not producing" could be better worded. "As" should contain a working verb/clause.

D) ensuring a plant that is genetically identical to the original rather than producing a random hybrid of two trees, as natural pollination would
Correct. "As" can take on working verbs. "Rather than" can take on verbs and noun phrases; "instead of" cannot.

E) and ensures a plant that is genetically identical to the original, unlike natural pollination that produces a random hybrid of two trees
"Like" and "unlike" cannot take on clauses.

IMO, the intended meaning is that "ensuring" is the result of preceded action, it cant be parallel with "is", this would change intended meaning.

Is there an easy way to determine when like and as should be used appropriately? I have read several articles on the same, yet somehow for eg, in this case the rules to like..as is not necessarily applicable.. My difficulty arises when I have to identify the answer within a minute..

Can someone shed some light on this?

Can someone help me how to break this sentence into phrases/clauses.

D says "Grafting is the process used to create many citrus, avocado, and pear trees, ensuring a plant (that is genetically identical to the original rather than producing a random hybrid of two trees), as natural pollination would. I am interpreting it as "Grafting is the process used to create many citrus, avocado, and pear trees, ensuring a plant as natural pollination would".

I'll try to do this the way I think would be most helpful. This is the sentence option D leads to:

Grafting is the process used to create many citrus, avocado, and pear trees, ensuring a plant that is genetically identical to the original rather than producing a random hybrid of two trees, as natural pollination would.

The contrast is between ensuring and producing. The brackets in your post would be better if we had something like this:

a plant (that is genetically identical to the original rather than a random hybrid of two trees)

Hello,
In this question what are we ensuring in the modifier "ensuring a plant that..."
Position of 'that' is very confusing.
It makes much more sense if we say "ensuring that a plant is genetically identical..." Or removing the that altogether as in "ensuring a plant is genetically identical..."
Putting that after a plant simply gives more detail about the plant and there is nothing to ensure.
Please help

Ensure + {that-clause} is a valid construction. For example:
1a. The government will ensure that a peaceful transfer of power takes place.

Dropping the that doesn't really change the sentence (we're still using ensure + {that-clause}).
1b. The government will ensure a peaceful transfer of power takes place. ← This is the same as (1a). The that is "understood" to be there.

But there are also other ways to use the verb ensure. For example, ensure can be followed by just a noun.
2. The government will ensure a peaceful transfer of power. ← Here we see only a noun phrase after ensure. This sentence tells us that the government will ensure {something} (in this case, that {something} is a noun, not a that-clause).

I have never contended the ensure+that structure. I am also saying tha same, but here the sentence does not follow this structure.
Instead of saying "ensuring that something..." It says "ensuring something that...". In the second structure that is modifying something and leaves the structure without any action.

For example:
Ensuring that a child is safe..
or we can say
Ensuring a child is safe.. (without using that)
But saying
Ensuring a child that is safe..
It does not make any sense. Here 'that' defines that child is already safe. What are we ensuring? A child!!

I have never contended the ensure+that structure. I am also saying tha same, but here the sentence does not follow this structure.

My apologies. I could have been clearer.

What I was trying to say is that ensure + {that-clause} is valid, but it's not the only way to use ensure.
