An important stylistic element in Dostoevsky’s novels is polyphony, the simultaneous presence of multiple narrative voices and perspectives first identified by the critic M. M. Bakhtin.

Decision markers: 1. An important stylistic element is singular and so, "is" should be used
2. whose refers to novels. It is incorrect to say that novels simultaneous presence of multiple narratives & perspectives
3. It was not novel, but polyphony which was first identified by critic

A) novels is polyphony, the simultaneous presence of multiple narrative voices and perspectives Correct.

B) novels are polyphony, multiple narrative voices and perspectives simultaneously present and Incorrect

C) novels is polyphony, whose simultaneous presence of multiple narrative voices and perspectives were Incorrect

D) novels is polyphony, in which multiple narrative voices and perspectives are present simultaneously Incorrect

E) novels are polyphony, the simultaneous presence of the multiplicity of narrative voices and perspectives Incorrect

IMO A

split A,C & D and B & E

Easily eliminate B & E split as plural form is used.

A) novels is polyphony, the simultaneous presence of multiple narrative voices and perspectives
Correct answer

B) novels are polyphony, multiple narrative voices and perspectives simultaneously present and
"are" - Plural form is incorrect

C) novels is polyphony, whose simultaneous presence of multiple narrative voices and perspectives were
Meaning is changed as in polyphony many themes were there but multiple narratives and perspectives were first identified by M. M. Bakhtin. Hence incorrect

D) novels is polyphony, in which multiple narrative voices and perspectives are present simultaneously
in Which is incorrect. It is denoting polyphony rather than novel. Hence eliminated

E) novels are polyphony, the simultaneous presence of the multiplicity of narrative voices and perspectives
"are" - Plural form is incorrect

E) novels are polyphony, the simultaneous presence of the multiplicity of narrative voices and perspectives

Please explain what whose refers to in option "C"
Also please explain why option "c" is wrong and what is wrong with the usage of "in which"
Thanks :)

A. The original sentence is correct as it is. The subject verb pair is correct, the definition of polyphony is correctly described by the later half of the sentence.
B. Subject verb error. Stylistic element cannot take plural verb are. Moreover the second part describing polyphony is written using the and phrase. This disconnects the sentence and changes the meaning. These are not two separate entities. Polyphase is the simultaneous presence and was first identified by bakhtin.
C. Polyphony is a stylistic element, it is not proper to refer it with whose. It seems polyphony is a living thing that has a presence. It changes the meaning as well.
D. The second part of the sentence does not make any sense. Simultaneously first identified by the critic changes the meaning.
E. Subject verb error.
A is correct
