I'm not very sure of my analysis, but here it is:
"that he wasn't bla bla bla" - that is introducing a subordinating clause, but we don't have a dependent clause.
(A) - is out
"who" can modify people, not verbs(married)
(B) and (C) - are out
Now between (D) and (E). The only difference is "one of our first conversations were" vs "one of our first conversations was". The subject is "one" which is singular, hence the verb has to be" was".
(D) - is out.
IMO - (E) is the answer.
