Here is the sequence (Time line) of events :
First: They were married for more than six decades.
After that :they got widowed.
Then the thought occurred( that their days of companionship had ended ).
Now they are in companionship again
This sequence of events needs to be demonstrated through proper tenses.
Options:
A)Both had widowed in recent years and both thought their days of companionship had ended both of these actions are in the same tense, implying they happened at the same time , well as that clearly should NOT be the case. INCORRECT.
B) After is necessary to show that correct sequence. Also we need HAD BEEN Past perfect continuous tense, to show that an action started in the past, went on for sometime in the past and then ended. INCORRECT.
C)Both had widowed in recent years, and both thought their days of companionship ended are NOT in their correct tenses. INCORRECT.
D) Option E is better than D as E clarifies the time line ( sequence) more clearly because E uses AFTER. INCORRECT.
E) CORRECT : Tense HAD BEEN has been correctly used to show something that began in the past and continued for some time and then ended, also AFTER is used and finally HAD ENDED ( PAST PERFECT )is correctly used to show some thing that happened before their current state.
