A. The volatility of a balanced portfolio of stocks and bonds, less than 80 percent of the overall stock market. This is clearly a sentence fragment. Eliminate.
B. A balanced portfolio of stocks and bonds is less than 80 percent as volatile as the overall stock market. Correct answer. The verb "is" makes this a complete sentence. No new errors are introduced.
C. A balanced portfolio of stocks and bonds is less than 80 percent as volatile as that of the overall stock market. Comparison error. "A balanced portfolio" is being compared with a possessive ("that of") of the stock market. Eliminate.
D. Volatility is less than 80 percent for a balanced portfolio of stocks and bonds compared to the overall stock market. Comparison error. Volatility is less than 80% of what is not made clear. Eliminate.
