Since a customer can watch television and uses computer applications simultaneously on their new LCD monitor, the computer manufacturer is positioned to secure a large share of what many analysts believe is a rapidly growing market; consumers who wish to purchase computer monitors to replace a defunct T.V. set.

A) Since a customer can watch television and uses computer applications simultaneously on their new LCD monitor There is a parallelism error between "watch" and "uses", one being a singular verb and the other plural, with both referring to what a "customer can" do. Eliminate.

B) By being able to watch television and use computer applications simultaneously on their new LCD monitors This portion of the sentence is a modifier which should modify "customer" (since it is the customer who is "able to watch television and use computer applications...". This option incorrectly modifies the computer manufacturer. Eliminate.

C) Because it allows customers to watch television while using computer applications simultaneously on its new LCD monitor Pronoun ambiguity for the first "it" makes this confusing to understand. The second "its" refers to the computer manufacturer, but the first "it" could also refer to the LCD monitor. Eliminate.

D) Because it has allowed customers to watch television and utilize computer applications simultaneously on its new LCD monitor Same error as (C). Eliminate.

E) By allowing customers to watch television and utilize computer applications simultaneously on its new LCD monitors Correct answer.

Hope this helps.

Hi coreyander,

Does the original source use a semicolon just before consumers?

Ksmew We have a fair amount of flexibility when using parallel infinitives (to + verb). Often, if the tasks are related and presented close together in the sentence, it's better to leave "to" out: "I want to sing and dance." If we included "to" in such a case, it wouldn't be wrong, but we would be emphasizing the tasks separately. "I want to sing and to dance" might indicate that I want to sing now and dance later.

We should include the second "to" if we want to make this kind of distinction, or if the verbs are far enough apart that the second "to" helps us to see the parallel structure.
For instance, we might say "The company intends to develop a viable product by the end of next year, despite the numerous technical hurdles to be overcome, and to market the product aggressively starting next summer."

Note that this same kind of reasoning applies to many modifiers. For instance, I might say "Kids today are accustomed to phones that seamlessly access the Internet and play videos," but if we had a longer sentence, we might want to say "phones THAT X (modifier, modifier) AND THAT Y." For instance, we might have "Kids today are accustomed to phones that seamlessly access the Internet, a phenomenon to which many older adults are still adjusting, and that play videos without interruption."

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

The underlined portion of the sentence contains a list of things a customer can do, so check that these verbs are parallel. Additionally, the sentence includes the pronoun their, so check that it agrees with its intended subject. The underlined portion lists that a customer can watch…and uses, which are not matching verb tenses, so this is a parallel construction error. The plural pronoun their does not agree with the singular subject the computer manufacturer, so eliminate choice A for parallel construction and pronoun errors, and look for obvious repeaters. Choice B is an obvious repeater of the pronoun agreement error because it also uses the plural pronoun their, so eliminate choice B. Now, evaluate the remaining answer choices individually, looking for reasons to eliminate each.

Choice C fixes the original pronoun agreement error by correctly using the singular pronouns it and its to refer to the singular noun the computer manufacturer but introduces a new parallel construction error by using the plural noun customers, which is not parallel to the singular noun LCD monitor. Eliminate choice C for a parallel construction error. Choice D fixes the original pronoun agreement error by correctly using the singular pronouns it and its to refer to the singular noun the computer manufacturer but creates a parallel construction error by using the plural noun customers, which is not parallel to the singular noun LCD monitor. Eliminate choice D for a parallel construction error. Choice E fixes the original parallel construction error by using the parallel verbs watch and utilize, fixes the original pronoun agreement error by using the singular pronoun its to refer to the singular subject the computer manufacturer, and introduces no new errors. Keep choice E.

Choice A: No. The verb can watch is not parallel to uses. The plural pronoun their does not agree with the singular subject the computer manufacturer. Parallel construction; Pronoun agreement.

Choice B: No. The plural pronoun their does not agree with the singular subject the computer manufacturer. Pronoun agreement.

Choice C: No. The singular noun monitor does not agree with the plural noun monitors. Parallel construction.

Choice D: No. The singular noun monitor does not agree with the plural noun monitors. Parallel construction.

Choice E: Correct.

The correct answer is choice E.

Hi coreyander,

Does the original source use a semicolon just before consumers?

I just checked. It does have a semicolon there. But what follows it is not an IC.
May be the original question writer meant it to be a "colon:"??

Yeah, it seems very likely that this was just a typo. A colon makes perfect sense there, while a semicolon doesn't work at all. They just didn't hit that SHIFT key!

We can easily eliminate A, B, and C

Now coming to D and E

D) Because it has allowed customers to watch television and utilize computer applications simultaneously on its new LCD monitor

Option D has three issues

1. "it" is ambiguous - It can refer to either LCD monitor or the company
2. customers is plural, while monitor is singular
3. "has allowed" is wrong tense.

E) By allowing customers to watch television and utilize computer applications simultaneously on its new LCD monitors
