1. Act like vs Act as
=>As some diplomats play the function of intermediaries between conflict groups, we need to use 'act as'.
Eliminate A,B and E

2. This sentence gives us general information about diplomats. So,we need to use simple present form
Eliminate A,B,D and E

Option C is the answer

Also since the

B) could continue acting like intermediaries
Error: act like

C) continue to act as intermediaries
Correct

D) would continue acting as intermediaries
Error: Tense error, general definition always should be in simple tense

E) are continuing to act like intermediaries
Error: act like

Meaning error:
Another error is the beginning of the sentences. In each of A,B,D, and E ,the sentence begins with modal verbs or express possiblity,prediction, necessity etc. This distorts the actual intended meaning (general statement)

Please let me know if the meaning error part of my explanation is correct or I am getting it wrong.

A - act like is when something needs to behave in a similar manner.
Here act as is a function with the intermediaries.
Also, simple present tense needs to be applied. May is incorrect.
Incorrect

B - similar to A. Also wrong use of gerund actin. Not parallel.
Incorrect

C - Correct

D- we need to use simple present tense here. Incorrect.

E - similar to A
Incorrect

Answer - C

Please feel free to correct my approach as I am struggling with improving my verbal score.

    LIKE( similar to ) is most often used as a preposition to express a resemblance or sameness.
      Like freshly brazen dew, this perfume smells.

    AS is used as a preposition, it means "in the role of"
      I worked as a teacher for years.

    In this question, the diplomats worked in the role of intermediaries between conflict groups.
    Thus, the diplomats worked ---AS---> intermediaries.

    A, B and E: Act as > Act like

Answer choice analysis:
    A) may continue to act like intermediaries
      Act as > Act like. OUT!

    B) could continue acting like intermediaries
      Act as > Act like. OUT!

    C) continue to act as intermediaries
      Better than the rest. C is the winner!

    D) would continue acting as intermediaries
      To emphasize on INTENT: To act as > acting as. OUT!

    E) are continuing to act like intermediaries

"the usage of could" indicates a story behind this sentence. but this single sentence does not reflect any scenario. i.e. they could but they actually did not. they could and they actually did.

D) would continue acting as intermediaries // past tense is not required. "the usage of would" indicates a story behind this sentence. but this single sentence does not reflect any scenario. if conditional is not there, blah blah.
