There is a tense error in the original sentence. The first part is in the past tense, but the second is in the present tense.
A - Eliminate for the tense error it has.
B - Resolves the tense error but look at this: "meticulously living animals". I don't think this makes any sense.
C - Resolves the tense error. I cannot find any other error here. Let's keep.
D - The semi-colon is the suspect here. Moreover, I am not sure "he also was ...illustrating" makes any sense. I was expecting a noun, such as an illustrator, after was here.
E - This completely changes the meaning. The original sentence informs us about two things about Edward Lear - that he wrote poems and illustrated animals, both in a particular way.
Therefore, the correct answer is option C.

There are 2 errors:
1.Parallelism : not only X but also Y.
Meticulously is an adverb modifying -ing verb - it's not parallel with NOT ONLY part of sentence
2.non underlined portun is past tense , so we should use past tense.
B and D has no tense issue but has parallelism issue.
E - by using "having" it's referring Edward, which totally changes the meaning of sentence , also it's not parallel.
C has none of the above error so C is the Winner
