Official Explanation

The original sentence suffers from redundancy. Something that plunges goes down; therefore, the adverb down is redundant. There is also no need to modify an abyss as “yawning”; the word already denotes something immeasurably deep. Choice (B) corrects these problems by eliminating ex- cess modifiers.

The correct answer is (B).
