Hello! Can please anyone explain how to use "the majority of"
I thought
Majority can be either singular or plural;
A majority of the students are ....
The majority of students is ....
Makhabbat Yes, it can be singular or plural, and depends on the context:

The Aleutian Islands of Alaska include many islands near the mainland, yet the majority of them (is/are) uninhabited by humans.

In this problem, what are actually uninhabited? The islands.

"them" refers to the "islands", and the islands (plural) ARE uninhabited.

However, if "majority" itself is the subject of the verb, it is singular:

A majority of the votes is necessary to pass the law. (Looking at the meaning, what is necessary? "A majority is necessary")

The majority that we currently have is unlikely to last.
