This question is based on Parallelism of Tenses.
The sentence is about the actions done by “the fictional main character”. He “encounters” ridiculous challenges. The remaining two actions are in the underlined portion. In order to maintain parallelism, those two actions must be in the same tense as the first. Since the verb ‘encounters’ is in the simple present tense, the remaining verbs must also be in the same tense as the sentence mention actions in a sequence.
In Option A, the verbs ‘overcame’ and ‘ended’ are in the simple past tense. Since this option lacks parallelism, Option A can be eliminated.
In Option B, the verb ‘has overcome’ is in the present perfect tense and ‘ends’ is in the simple present tense. Since this option also lacks parallelism, Option B can also be eliminated.
In Option D, the two verbs are in the simple future tense and the present perfect tense respectively. So, Option D can also be eliminated.
In Option E, the two verbs are in the past perfect and simple future tense respectively. So, Option E can also be eliminated.
In Option C, the two verbs ‘overcomes’ and ‘ends’ are in the simple present tense and are thus parallel to the verb ‘encounters’. Therefore, C is the most appropriate option.
