Hello, angsha. What is the source of the question, if you do not mind my asking? In my view, the OA is flawed, but the rest of the answer choices all have their own problems. At a barebones level, (C) is saying that Sybil rode alerting the soldiers. I see the tag "Gerund" above the question, but the -ing phrase here is not a gerund, since it is not acting in the capacity of a noun. Rather, the phrase is a typical modifier, and a comma would make the difference between a correct and an incorrect sentence:
INCORRECT: Sybil rode alerting the soldiers.
CORRECT: Sybil rode, alerting the soldiers.
I am happy to see new questions on the forum, but I think they have to be scrutinized to ensure that they are what they seem, and this one appears a little off to me. ((A) and (B) have verb tense issues, as does (D) in alerting, while (E) is not idiomatically sound in saying that the girl rode for alerting.)
