Option B, changes the meaning of the original sentence option B states that ants use their sense of smell to decide whether a visitor is an intruder or not. This was never stated in the original sentence, it stated that ants use the sense of smell to protect their colony and queen, and to do that they use the sense of smell to decide whether a visitor is an intruder or not.

Notice the subtle change.

A. Ants, in order to protect their queen and colony, uses the sense of smell to decide whether a visitor to their nest is an intruder: S-V agreement error

B. To decide whether a visitor to their nest is an intruder or not, and in order to protect their queen and colony, ants use the sense of smell: changes the meaning of original sentence

C. Ants use the sense of smell to decide whether a visitor to their nest is an intruder, and thereby protect their colony and queen

D. Ants, to protect their colony and queen by deciding whether a visitor to their nest is an intruder, uses the sense of smell: S-V agreement error

E. To protect their colony and queen by deciding if a visitor to their nest is an intruder, ants use the sense of smell: awkward construction, if states condition so replace if with whether

IMO: C
