My answer is (E). It took me 01:23.

"despite that fact that" or "even though"? I think either is okay.

"for several years" is a strong indicator that a perfect tense is needed. Rap artists had gained exposure on radio charts and in record stores before they had trouble breaking into video channels.
(ABCD) does not use past perfect tense, leaving (E) for consideration.

(E) actually uses past perfect progressive tense. The progressive tense indicates that the exposure continued despite difficulty breaking into TV channels. So its use is appropriate.

Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC1)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

Rap artists had trouble breaking into the daily rotation of videos on television channels such as MTV in the 1980s, despite the fact that they gained exposure on radio charts and in record stores for several years.

A) despite the fact that they gained exposure on radio charts and in record stores for several years
They are not having the right reference back therefore out

B) even though for several years they gained exposure on radio charts and in record stores.
Similar reasoning as A

C) despite the fact that these artists gained exposure for several years with radio charts and record stores.
in is required before recoed stores since the experience is gained by working in the recoed stores and not by the record stores itself

D) despite the fact that for several years these artists gained exposure on radio charts and in record stores.
The meaning is perfect even though past perfect isn't used therefore let us hang on to it

E) even though these artists had been gaining exposure on radio charts and in record stores for several years.
The past perfect tense and meaning is perfect however since experienced has been already gained and the rap artists are going for the MTV shows after gaining experience it would be beeter to eleminate E

Therefore IMO D
