Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-
Bunuel
The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is because elephants are just as dangerous as predators.

A. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is because elephants are just as dangerous as predators

B. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is that elephants are just as dangerous than predators are

C. Tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants because elephants are just as dangerous as predators are

D. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is that elephants are just as dangerous as predators

E. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is that elephants are just as dangerous as other predators are

Meaning is crucial to solving this problem:
Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended meaning of this sentence is that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants because elephants are just as dangerous as predators are.

Concepts tested here: Meaning + Idioms + Awkwardness/Redundancy.

• “as A as B” is a correct, idiomatic usage.
• Comparison must always be made between similar elements.

A: This answer choice incorrectly compares the verb phrase "elephants are" to the noun "predators"; please remember, a comparison must always be made between similar elements. Further, Option A uses the needlessly wordy phrase "The reason that...is because", leading to awkwardness and redundancy; this usage is redundant because "The reason that" and "is" can be deleted without a loss of clarity, and both "reason" and "because" convey the same information.

B: This answer choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction "as A ("dangerous") than B ("predators")" rather than the idiomatic construction "as A as B"; please remember, “as A as B” is correct, idiomatic usage. Further, Option B uses the needlessly wordy phrase "The reason that...is", leading to awkwardness and redundancy.

C: Correct. This answer choice uses the phrase "predators are", conveying the intended meaning - that elephants are not predators, but are just as dangerous as predators. Further, Option C correctly compares the verb phrase "elephants are" with the verb phrase "predators are". Additionally, Option C correctly uses the idiomatic construction "as A ("dangerous") as B ("predators")". Besides, Option C is free of any awkwardness or redundancy.

D: This answer choice incorrectly compares the verb phrase "elephants are" to the noun "predators"; please remember, a comparison must always be made between similar elements. Further, Option D uses the needlessly wordy phrase "The reason that...is", leading to awkwardness and redundancy.

E: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "other predators are"; the use of "other" incorrectly implies that elephants are predators and just as dangerous as other predators; the intended meaning is that elephants are not predators, but are just as dangerous as predators. Further, Option E uses the needlessly wordy phrase "The reason that...is", leading to awkwardness and redundancy.

Hence, C is the best answer choice.

All the best!

A. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is because elephants are just as dangerous as predators
linking verb should be followed by a action verb or noun. Because next to is is incorrect. Eliminate

B. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is that elephants are just as dangerous than predators are
as...than is incorrect idiom. Eliminate

C. Tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants because elephants are just as dangerous as predators are
This conveys the original sentence meaning with correct parallel between the how dangerous elephants are when compared with predators. Keep

D. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is that elephants are just as dangerous as predators
danger is compared to predators. Eliminate

E. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is that elephants are just as dangerous as other predators are
"other predators" is ambiguous. is elephant considered as predator? Eliminate

Hence, C is the right answer choice.

Correct option C

C. Tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants
because elephants are just as dangerous as predators are
Correct: Intended meaning, proper explanation of cause and effect, and (Idiom as X as Y are)

Eliminate A, B, C and E
- “The Reason” and “because” are similar meaning, makes sentence redundancy
- usage of “is” after elephants, creates ambiguity
- that “tourist” and that “Elephants”
- idiom as X as Y are – is correct usage, which lacks in A and D, and in B as X than Y is wrong Idiom

A. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is
because elephants are just as dangerous as predators___
D. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is
that elephants are just as dangerous as predators___
B. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is
that elephants are just as dangerous than predators are
E. The reason that tourists on safari are warned to keep a distance from elephants is
that elephants are just as dangerous as other predators are

Hello Gknight5603,

We hope this finds you well.

Having gone through your query, we believe we can help clear up your doubt.

In this question, the comparison is not being made between the "elephants" and the "predators"; the comparison is between how dangerous elephants are and how dangerous predators are. Thus, the comparison needs to be made between the action of being dangerous, taken by the elephants and the action of being dangerous taken by the predators, meaning the sentence must draw comparison between the verb phrases "elephants are" and "predators are".

In your example, "X is a better cricketer than Y is." is the correct option, as the comparison is between how good X and Y, respectively, are at being a cricketer.

We hope we were able to resolve your doubt.

All the best!

thanks for reply.

But the ambiguity persists

please refer to examples written by Daagh sir:

He is tall like his brother is but jumps higher than his brother jumps……… first portion compares person with person and so no need for the verb ‘js’for the brother; The second part compares an action of jumping. So you require a verb for the brother. Jumps is however repetitive. Not a good choice.

He is tall like his brother but jumps higher than his brother… wrong; we do need a verb for his brother’s jumping in the second part. Otherwise jumping gets compared with his brother.

He is tall like ‘his brother is’ but jumps higher than does his brother …like his brother is wrong

He is tall like his brother but jumps higher than does his brother … perfect choice; no action verb in the first part. Action verb ‘does’ in the second arm is better than ‘jumps’.

He is tall like ‘his brother is’ but jumps higher than his brother….’like his brother is’ wrong
