Most spices are prepared for use in food after being dried and often ground or grated into powder, unlike the preparation of small seeds which are sometimes used whole.

(A) the preparation of small seeds which are sometimes used whole

(B) small seeds, which are sometimes used whole

(C) small seeds' preparation, which sometimes get used whole

(D) when small seeds are prepared by being used whole

(E) the whole usage of small seeds which is sometimes the preparation

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Answer: B

The word "unlike" signals a comparison. The subject of the first clause is "most spices," so what follows "unlike" must be comparable to "most spices." The only choice that works is (B), with "small seeds" in that position. Each of the other choices places the act of preparation or usage in direct comparison to "most spices," which is not parallel. Choice (B) is correct.
