Diabetes, a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin,
continues to frustrate researchers seeking the cause of the ailment.
A. continues to frustrate researchers seeking
B. continue to frustrate researchers who seek
C. has continued to frustrate researchers who are seeking
D. are continuing to be frustrating to researchers seeking
E. have continued to frustrate those researchers who seek
Diabetes is a singular noun.
(The non-underlined portion " a disease" confirms the above)
Eliminating B, D, E
A vs C
researchers seeking vs researchers who are seeking ---> Both seem fine
continues vs has continued
IMO, A
Can someone please explain the subtle difference b/w Present and Present Perfect for an action that started in the past and is still continuing?
In (C) "has continued" itself means that the action started in the past and is still continuing - an which can be represented by Present Perfect
On the other hand, the statement " Diabetes .... continues ..." can be interpreted as a fact (i.e simple present)
Assuming (A) is the correct answer...
Would (C) be correct, if we reword it to show timeline like below?
Since the last 50 years, Diabetes........., has continued....
Thank you.
