Can someone please explain why "so as to" is incorrect?
I am also under the impression that when the intent is to depict "cause and effect" (as is the case here: option to have personal information removed so that the effect of preservation of privacy is achieved), "so that" is the preferred construct.

For example:

I worked hard so that I do well in the exam.

The above sentence is preferable to:

I worked hard so as to do well in the exam.

Let's wait for other experts to respond too.

Hello Blair15,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, on GMAT, "so as to" is generally an incorrect usage; "so + cause + as to + effect" is the correct, idiomatic usage.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
