My answer is (C). It took me 01:04.
(A) "on account of" = "because of". Therefore (A) and (E) are essentially the same. Because they cannot both be correct, they must be both wrong.
Also, one OG explanation says that "On account of" is wordy and awkward.
Alternatively, (A) says "on account of the compound", which is nonsensical.
(B) Meaning is unclear.

(D) Only possible antecedent for "they" is "Characteristics", but the most appropriate subject here is "silicon nitride".
