The use of "had" is unnecessary, because the context indicates that "Bill Gates rejected" the idea before "Netscape demonstrated..."

But since we do not have a comma, "rejecting" is acting as a verb and V+ing does not make sense in the context (addition of a comma would make rejecting a V+ing modifier)
