the usage of If denotes conditional
where tense is had , so we need future perfect they would have...
option B has this only they would have definitely made a contribution

Past Time : Investors perceived (Action 1)--------------->contribution (Action 2)-------|PRESENT TIME|

Action 1 is in Past perfect form Had + Verb-ed ( Had perceived )

Action 2 , a conditional tense (Would have) suggests the action did not happen

Choice (B) looks perfect in this case as it conveys the conditional meaning, hence Answer must be (B)

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The condition part is in Past Perfect (had perceived), indicating a Conditional 3 sentence, but the result part is in Future Past (would contribute), indicating Conditional 2.

What helps us identify this question as a Conditionals question, as well as identify the mistake, is the following Stop Sign: If / Unless


B. they would have definitely made a contribution

Although this answer choice corrects the original mistake and is grammatically correct, stylistically it is not the best of the five answer choices.

Since there is another grammatically correct answer choice that is more concise, it is preferable to this one.


C. they would definitely have contributed

This answer choice is both grammatically correct and concise.


D. they had contributed definitely

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The condition part is in Past Perfect (had perceived), indicating a Conditional 3 sentence. However, the result part is in Past Perfect as well (had contributed), which is not a tense used in the result part of any of the three Conditional sentences.
