In an effort to promote the widespread consumption of organic fruits and vegetables and reduce as much as possible the consumption of non-organic foods, given the harmful effects believed to be inherent in them, the executive committee of the downtown vegetable market has decided to ban the sale of all non-organic fruits and vegetables at the market.
ok, so we need to weaken the argument by providing new evidence which would suggest that the executive committee's plan is not a good one.
what if 80% of the sales are of non-organic fruits and vegetables? what if people buy non-organic because of the low prices? if these products are no longer sold by the market, would people continue to buy from that market? if not, then the plan is flawed.
A) Studies have shown that there exist non-organic alternatives that do not have the harmful effects traditionally attributed to non-organic foods; however, the executive committee of the market does not accept such findings.
irrelevant.
B) The fruit and vegetable market of a neighboring town plans to implement a similar ban on the sale of all non-organic foods.
this is a non-weakener. has no influence on the conclusion.
C) After other towns implemented similar bans on the sale of non-organic foods, the benefits in the health of the town population have yet to be witnessed.
so benefits are yet to be witnessed. no guarantees that the organic food is beneficial. however, our main task is to say that the ban is bad for the company. since this one doesn't suggest that the plan is not good, this choice is incorrect.
D) Most shoppers at the downtown vegetable market are more cost-conscious than health-conscious, and since organic foods tend to cost more than their non-organic alternatives, shoppers are likely to stop frequenting the market.
aha, so shoppers buy because of the low-priced products and they would stop frequenting the market if such products are not sold. this would affect the market's sales, and thus, the decision is a bad one.
E) Non-organic products that are not considered to be food will still be allowed to be sold at the downtown vegetable market.
irrelevant.
