Discrepancy is skeletons consists of animals that were killed and cooked by tribes that lived in Northern Asia at that time but also includes animals that were considered sacred by those tribes and were never hunted or eaten.

(A) Some of the skeletons found during the expedition belonged to animals that no longer inhabit the area.
Incorrect, this doesn't resolve the discrepancy, it just brings another data point that doesn't help us.

(B) Skeletons of most animals did not have damages typical of the skeletons of animals that had been killed, cut and cooked.
Incorrect, this option doesn't give us a reason why skeletons had animals that were considered sacred by those tribes and were never hunted or eaten.

(C) Tribes that inhabited Northern Asia 1000 years ago used fire to cook food
Incorrect, this doesn't resolve the discrepancy, it just brings another data point that doesn't help us.

(D) Another study indicated that there was a great famine in Northern Asia at that time, which forced local tribes to look for alternative sources for food.
Incorrect, this doesn't resolve the discrepancy, this rather deepens the mystery by indicating that local tribes must have cooked those sacred animals for their food to survive.

(E) A further study indicated evidence of a large fire that had occured in Northern Asia approximately 1000 years ago
Correct, this clears the discrepancy that an external factor out of control was responsible for killing those sacred animals as well and local tribes were not responsible for killing those animals.
