The correct answer is choice (D). The question asks us to state an assumption of the argument. The conclusion of the argument is that when a novel becomes a bestseller,
other authors do not regard it as great literature. The premise is that serious novelists write because of a desire to create a work of art, and the argument assumes that one cannot simultaneously create a work of art and a bestseller.
Answer choices (A) and (B) are out of the scope of the argument; we are told nothing about solitude or envy. Choice (C) is also out of the scope; we are not talking about the entire works of an author, but one book. Furthermore, we are not looking to support the argument. Answer choice (E) is also out of scope; the argument is concerned with books that become bestsellers, and not those that become great literature. This leaves (D), which is the assumption we were looking for.

Option A - Nothing is said in the stimulus about whether a best-seller or a great work must be created in solitude, so this cannot be a differentiating factor between the two.
Option B - Once again, nothing is really indicated about being envious or not. This answer is therefore, irrelevant.
Option C - This answer is a bit more tempting but there is a trap. The word "already" suggests that the great works produced would have to have happened before the bestseller. We are however, talking about the current work and trying to find a difference. This answer is therefore incorrect.
Option D - This option clearly outlines the difference in intention when trying to produce a bestseller or a great work of art. In doing so, it forms the bridge between the premises and conclusion, thereby being a valid assumption the conclusion rests on and the CORRECT answer.
Option E - This is rather the opposite of what we're going for, since it is other novelists calling out the best-seller to begin with. This option therefore doesn't make sense and can be eliminated.
