Marked A. Suggests that all the conditions that worked for others should be replicated by/for Anuj to succeed.

The best answer is B. The argument explicitly mentions that Anuj intends to buy the diet pill in order to lose 15 pounds of weight. This is the only thing linked to the intended weight loss by Anuj, since if there is any food which can counteract the effectiveness of the drug, then Anuj must avoid them, in order for the drug to work well.

A provides many scenarios which are out of scope, and are not linked to Anuj’s plan per the information provided. So it’s ruled out.

No mention is made about the frequency of taking the pill. It could be once daily, once every two days, once in three days. So C does not necessarily have to be true.

No direct information is provided about what specific dietary restrictions there are for the pill. The restrictions may have nothing to do with proteins and carbohydrates. So does not necessarily have to be true in the context.

Monitoring his weight daily is not relevant here. As long as the pill is working as it ought, there is no need to monitor weight daily. Knowing what he/she weighs daily will not in anyway affect the effectiveness of the medicine on Anuj.

'Must be true' questions must be solved only from the premises given and can never be fancied from unstated factors.

A. Anuj’s body type, exercise regimen, and diet must be similar to those of the people who lost 15 pounds with the pill. - This is the only choice that tags Anuj with other success stories. This is the correct choice.

B. Anuj must avoid certain foods that may counteract the effectiveness of the pill. --- Not given in the prompt.

C. Anuj must take the diet pill at the same time every day. Taking the pill same time is outside the scope.

D. Anuj must adjust his diet to include more protein and fewer carbohydrates. -- Not given in the prompt

E. Anuj must monitor his weight loss very carefully-- Not given in the prompt.

STRENGTHEN ARGUMENT
[con] Anuj wants to lose weight in one month by taking a diet pill [prem] that seems to have worked with several other people; [asum] he must assume that the pill was the cause of losing weight, not any other factor, such as exercise, body type, diet, etc…

B. "avoid foods that MAY counteract the pill": if he doesn't avoid such foods, the pill MIGHT still work, so this doesn't need to be true for his plan to succeed;
C. "at the same time every day": this was never discussed, so this doesn't need to be true for the plan to succeed;
D. "adjust his diet…more protein": this was never discussed, so this doesn't need to be true;
E. "must monitor his weight loss": this was never discussed, so this doesn't need to be true;

Answer (A): this needs to be true for his plan to succeed.

As per the argument Anuj knows people who lost 10-20 pounds in one month. He believes that the diet pill these people took would be able to help him to lose 15 pounds in the same one month period. So, it’s basically an assumption question.

A. Anuj’s body type, exercise regimen, and diet must be similar to those of the people who lost 15 pounds with the pill. – CORRECT. If we negate this option i.e. if Anuj’s body type, exercise regimen, and diet is not similar to those of the people the argument falls apart.
B. Anuj must avoid certain foods that may counteract the effectiveness of the pill. – WRONG. Nothing as such is mentioned in the argument hence irrelevant. Though it might be true in real life, it hardly matters in this argument’s context.
C. Anuj must take the diet pill at the same time every day. – WRONG. Irrelevant.
D. Anuj must adjust his diet to include more protein and fewer carbohydrates. – WRONG. Irrelevant.
E. Anuj must monitor his weight loss very carefully. – WRONG. Irrelevant. Whether he monitors his weight or not, it doesn’t matter.

Answer (A).

Competition Mode Question

Anuj wants to lose about 15 pounds. He knows several people who have lost 10 to 20 pounds in just one month with a particular over-the-counter diet pill. Anuj plans to buy the diet pill in order to lose 15 pounds in the same time period.

Based on the previous information, for Anujs plan to succeed, which of the following must be true?

A. Anuj’s body type, exercise regimen, and diet must be similar to those of the people who lost 15 pounds with the pill.
B. Anuj must avoid certain foods that may counteract the effectiveness of the pill.
C. Anuj must take the diet pill at the same time every day.
D. Anuj must adjust his diet to include more protein and fewer carbohydrates.
E. Anuj must monitor his weight loss very carefully.

Official Explanation

Correct Answer: A

Anujs plan of action is based on the assumption that he will have the same success with the diet pill as his acquaintances. In order for this to be true, however, a must also be true he must have a similar body type, exercise regimen, and diet. If, for example, he does not exercise but those people who lost weight with the pill did, he might not have the same results. Anuj may have to avoid certain foods (choice b) or take the pill at the same time each day (choice c) in order for it to be most effective, but these assumptions do not underlie his belief that he will have the same results as the others. Choice d is incorrect because the passage does not state what sort of diet the others had, and again this plan of action rests upon the assumption that he will have similar results. Anuj should probably monitor his weight loss carefully (choice e), but this is just common sense and not relevant to his plan of action.
