E seems to be most reasonable. since People with second gene, did not show high level of cholesterol. It indicates either the gee inhibits of fixes it.
Other options do not seems to fix the problem.
Hence E is the solution

We can straight out reject A and B; they're not supported by the passage at all.

C does look tempting, but remember we're not asked for an explanation - Eliminate!

D also looks plausible, but on careful reading it implies the opposite.

Hence, E!

On a side note, E has the weakest language and such answers are usually correct for inference questions on the GMAT.
