How can it be possible that someone on earth sets DST and the sun will dance accordingly to this tune ? Delaying DST by 3 weeks will still mean sun will set at the scheduled time so how will it help these stores ? It will still be dark and people will not show up.

The whole point of CR questions is to strengthen/weaken. It's not real anyway. GMAT is testing your reasoning skills not general knowledge skills.

So people may or may not go to these stores with the additional daylight hours and even if they do go they may or may not purchase from these stores. Maybe these people go there to just window shop?

chiplesschap, I had a similar initial misunderstanding, so I hope my breakdown clarifies why (A) is correct:

The passage refers to two scenarios: Fall-Time (FT) and Not-Fall-Time (NFT). During FT, the sun sets an hour later compared to NFT, meaning daylight extends further into the evening.

To illustrate, let’s take a simple example:

  • In NFT, the sun sets at 5 pm.
  • In FT, due to the shift in daylight saving time, the sun sets at 6 pm (one hour later).

It’s important to note that we aren’t altering the way the sun moves relative to the earth; we’re simply adjusting the clock. This effectively "shifts" time by an hour, providing more daylight during the evening.

Implication:

During FT, people will have more daylight after their typical work hours, extending the period they can comfortably shop without it being dark.

I don't get this question. I understand that however the time is adjusted, there would be an exact amount of sun light during the day, and people will only shop during sunlight. So Option A is not relevant. Bunuel

I do not get why option A is right.

No one can adjust when sun sets. So we are just adjusting time and if we are just adjusting time then option A becomes invalid because it has nothing to do with time.

It says about darkness. So people who don't prefer to go out after dark won't necessarily see the clock and go out. They will not go out after sunset.

Your thinking: People who avoid darkness follow the SUN, not the clock. So changing clocks won't change their behavior.

The reality: People's SCHEDULES follow the clock. Their COMFORT follows the sun.

Example:
  • You leave work at 5:30pm every day (schedule = clock-based)
  • Without extended daylight saving: 5:30pm = dark → you skip the store
  • With extended daylight saving: 5:30pm = still light → you stop at the store

Your schedule didn't change. But now your schedule happens during DAYLIGHT instead of darkness.

That's why (A) works perfectly - these people would shop at their normal times IF it were light. Now it is.
