Psychiatrist: We are learning that neurochemical imbalances can cause behavior ranging from extreme mental illness to less serious but irritating behavior such as obsessive fantasizing, petulance, or embarrassment. These findings will promote compassion and tolerance when looking at a mental illness, quirk, or mere difference between two persons, since being mentally healthy can now begin to be seen as simply having the same neurochemical balances as most people.

Which one of the following most accurately expresses the conclusion of the psychiatrist’s argument?

The psychiatrist’s main point is about the effect of these findings on how people judge others. The claims about neurochemical imbalance are support. From that support, the psychiatrist concludes that people will become more compassionate and tolerant.

(A) Understanding the role of the neurochemical in behavior will foster empathy toward others.

This is the conclusion. It restates the idea that these findings will promote compassion and tolerance toward people whose behavior differs from the norm.

(B) Neurochemical imbalances can cause mental illness and other behaviors.

This is a premise, not the conclusion. It is the evidence the psychiatrist uses.

(C) Neurochemical balances and imbalances are the main determinants of mental behavior.

This is too strong. The argument says they can cause certain behaviors, not that they are the main determinants of all mental behavior.

(D) Being mentally healthy is a matter of having the same neurochemical balances as most people.

This is supporting explanation for why compassion may increase, not the main conclusion.

(E) Advances in neurochemistry enhance our theories of mental illness.

This is not the conclusion. The argument is about increased tolerance, not about better theories.

(A) Understanding the role of the neurochemical in behavior will foster empathy toward others.

(B) Neurochemical imbalances can cause mental illness and other behaviors.

(C) Neurochemical balances and imbalances are the main determinants of mental behavior.

(D) Being mentally healthy is a matter of having the same neurochemical balances as most people.

(E) Advances in neurochemistry enhance our theories of mental illness.

Premises:

- Neurochemical imbalances can cause behavior ranging from extreme mental illness to less serious ...

- Being mentally healthy can now begin to be seen as simply having the same neurochemical balances as most people.
(this statement appears after since. It is a premise (support) given by the author to his conclusion.)

Conclusion: These findings will promote compassion and tolerance when looking at a mental illness, quirk, or mere difference between two persons.
(this is the author's claim. That the findings will promote compassion)

(A) Understanding the role of the neurochemical in behavior will foster empathy toward others.

As we said, this is the author's claim about what will be the consequence of these findings. It is his conclusion of the argument.
Though the author talks about "compassion and tolerance" and this option mentions "empathy," it is still quite relevant. Also none of the other options reflect this idea.
Hence this is the answer.

(B) Neurochemical imbalances can cause mental illness and other behaviors.

Not the conclusion. This is a finding the author quotes to support his conclusion.

(C) Neurochemical balances and imbalances are the main determinants of mental behavior.

Not mentioned or implied anywhere.

(D) Being mentally healthy is a matter of having the same neurochemical balances as most people.

Again, this is suggested to support the conclusion.

(E) Advances in neurochemistry enhance our theories of mental illness.

Though we can infer from the argument that "Advances in neurochemistry can enhance our theories of mental illness," it is not the author's conclusion. He is talking about how the findings will foster compassion.
