Although i picked B as the answer owing to the information in the premise stated, i would like to know what is wrong with D ?
Is it primarily because there was no indication of natural phenomenon affecting evolution, in the premise stated ?

Thanks,
K

Why not C ? Humans have more upright posture compared to Chimpanzees, so that could be the reason why humans evolved more than Chimpanzees.

B mentions an impact on food sources. It doesn't necessarily mean that the consumers will also experience a positive evolutionary impact.

Expert please explain why not D?

There is no information how the epidemic affected chimpanzees. Did it affect physically or mentally and how does evolution in a species is impacted by an epidemic? It might as well give some immunity to concerned species. We've to assume too many things in D, hence D cannot be the correct answer.

I was confused B and D, but B wins.

(B)
It compares the food sources of Homo Sapiens and other species which are in the same habitat. It impact both objects (Homo Sapiens and chimpanzees). Homo Sapiens have greater sources can explain why they evolved at a much higher rate.

(D)
It just mention epidemic will affect chimpanzees, doesn't say anything about what happen to Homo Sapiens. What if the Homo Sapiens was also impacted by epidemic ? It's not a persuasive explaination.

There is not enough information on the effect of the epidemic. As we have to assume too many things in D, D CANNOT be the correct answer.

Why not C ? Humans have more upright posture compared to Chimpanzees, so that could be the reason why humans evolved more than Chimpanzees.

B mentions an impact on food sources. It doesn't necessarily mean that the consumers will also experience a positive evolutionary impact.

Hi Abhinav

Option (C) states: Some species evolve their brains faster than others as they get into a more upright posture.

Therefore, while it is true that homo sapiens are more upright than chimpanzees, we do not know if this necessarily led to their brains evolving faster. Additionally, the paradox is about the faster evolution of homo sapiens compared to chimpanzees over the last hundred thousand years. We do not know from the stimulus whether the homo sapiens grew more erect over this period or they they were already erect before this period. This is not information that can be logically assumed. Hence (C) does not help to resolve the paradox.

Option (B) confirms the positive impact on the food sources of homo sapiens and it is a logical extrapolation to extend the same positive impact to the evolution of the consumers of such food. This is less of a leap than assuming that homo sapiens and chimpanzees were both hunched at the beginning of the hundred thousand year period under consideration. Hence, between the two, (B) better resolves the paradox.

Hope this helps.

Makes sense. Thanks you for the clarification!

Why would a positive impact on food sources affect the process of evolution? There is no context in the paragraph of anything as such.

I appreciate the response from the Crackverbal Team. But IMO, if there is a "leap" or assumption to be made with option B then a similar leap could be made with option D as well, assuming that the epidemic led to reduction in the evolution rate.

A CRITICAL ERROR in the explanation by Crackverbal with Option C is that fact that Homo Sapiens came after Homo Erectus which was the first human species to be able to walk upright. Homo Sapiens always had an upright posture as one of their identifying characteristics. So their logic for rejecting option C is inapplicable. And the phrasing that more upright posture helps evolve the brains faster directly addresses the paradox. Hence this should be the correct answer.
