We are asked to resolve 2 apparently conflicting facts.
John received a 4.0 in 1 class but received a 3.0 in his other 3 classes mentioned. However, he ended up with a 3.0 for the semester.
The apparent Paradox is that the 4.0 he received in the writing class should have pulled his GPA slightly above a 3.0 at the very least.
Notice right away that the facts do not say that these are the only 3 classes he took for the semester.
A
If his writing class was worth double, then this would make the apparent Paradox even worse! Based on the facts we would expect his GPA to be even higher than slightly above a 3.0. A is wrong.
B
Even if he changed 1 of the 3.0 courses to a PASS/FAIL grade, this would again widen the paradox. We would expect his GPA to be higher because he has 1 less 3.0 grade to average against the 4.0.
C
Even if biology is given as a 2 semester course, he still got a grade for this semester that was computed into his GPA. This info does nothing to resolve the paradox.
E
Whether a class has a final exam or not, the facts still stand. He received his grades and there is an apparent paradox as to why his GPA is not higher.
D resolved the paradox by telling us that there were other classes that went into his overall GPA calculation. Given that he received a C in this class, it would tend to negate the effect that the 4.0 has on his GPA and bring his overall GPA back down near the 3.0 he received in his other classes
D resolve the paradox and is correct
