Three methods to find the strengthener
1. Adds to the conclusion
2. Reiterates the conclusion
3. Explains the conclusion

The strengthener in this question forms a cause-effect relationship, thus explaining and strengthening the conclusion.

We are given a policy proposal and a conclusion based on that proposal.
[hr]
Argument Breakdown:
  • Premise: If highways allowed only cars and trucks with capacity less than 8 tons, most truck traffic would be forced off the highways.
  • Conclusion: This would reduce the risk of collisions on the highway.
[hr]
What would strengthen this conclusion?
We need to support the idea that removing large trucks from highways would reduce collisions.
That means we want a statement that shows large trucks (i.e., those over 8 tons) are a significant cause of highway collisions.
[hr]
Option Analysis:
A. Cars with a capacity of more than 8 tons are already excluded outside highways.
→ Irrelevant. It’s about where large cars are excluded, not about accidents or risk on highways. ❌
B. Highways are experiencing overcrowded traffic primarily because of sharp increases in car traffic.
→ Weakens the argument. Suggests cars are the main problem, not trucks. ❌
C. Many drivers of trucks would rather buy truck with a capacity of less than 8 tons than be excluded from highways.
→ Talks about truckers' preferences, not about safety or collision risk. ❌
D. The number of collisions that occur near highways has decreased in recent years.
→ Talks about areas near highways, not on highways, and does not directly relate to trucks. ❌
E. Trucks that have a capacity of more than 8 tons cause a disproportionately large number of collisions in highways.
→ ✅ This directly supports the conclusion. If large trucks cause a lot of collisions relative to their number, then removing them would reduce collisions on highways.

Bunuel
If highways were restricted to cars and only those truck with capacity of less than 8 tons, most the truck traffic would be forced to run outside highway. Such a reduction in the amount of truck traffic would reduce the risk of collision in highway.

Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the conclusion drawn in the second sentence?

A. Cars with a capacity of more than 8 tons are already excluded outside highways.

B. Highways are experiencing overcrowded traffic primarily because of sharp increases in car traffic.

C. Many drivers of trucks would rather buy truck with a capacity of less than 8 tons than be excluded from highways.

D. The number of collisions that occur near highways has decreased in recent years.

E. Trucks that have a capacity of more than 8 tons cause a disproportionately large number of collisions in highways.
