I am wondering why E) isn't a possible answer. I was tossing between A) and E), but thought a 're-examination' is too strong a language than the author has mentioned, hence why I went with E).

(E) doesn't work because the author doesn't favor reliance on genetic factors over reliance on environmental factors. Rather, the author says that we have a far deeper understanding of the abilities of both genes and environment.

So, the author's point is that, because we have deeper understanding of the abilities of genes and the environment to affect evolution, we should no longer simply go with Darwin's theory.

So, while it's true that the author doesn't suggest exactly "re-examination" of Darwin's theory, (A) is still the only viable answer.
