OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Argument Evaluation: strengthen the argument

Situation:

In spite of income inequality increasing in the UK, it is one of the best places to live

and work since the global financial crisis in 2007.

Reasoning:

Which point can strengthen the argument that in spite of the inequality, Britain is still

one of the best places to live and work? It should be the one that says that people are

leading a contented life in Britain.

(A) This tells how the Britons tackled the financial crisis; it has no relevance to the UK being a good place to live and work.

(B) Change may be indicative of possible or negative impact, hence irrelevant.

(C) Correct. This says that there has been an increase in the percentage of British people declaring being very satisfied with their lives. This strongly supports the argument since ‘being satisfied with life’ is suggestive of people considering the UK one of the best places to live.

(D) Stress ‘level’ of people can be just one aspect that contributes to the quality of life.

(E) This is concerned with satisfaction and confidence in institutions alone and may
strengthen the argument partially.

Choice (C)

Hi bb, here in this question I picked answer E as it did talk about life satisfaction and confidence. How come C is the answer? Could you please explain
Abhi077
The UK is one of the best places to live and work, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD) although income inequality in the UK increased by more than two percent since the global financial crisis struck in 2007.

Which of the following, if true, reinforces the claim made by OECD?

A. The Britons endured the hardships caused by the financial crisis.

B. There was only a marginal change in the overall health of the population.

C. The percentage of British people declaring being very satisfied with their lives increased from 63% to 64%.

D.People’s stress levels did not soar as it happened in Greece and Chile.

E. Life satisfaction and confidence in institutions did not decline since 2007.

A. “The Britons endured the hardships caused by the financial crisis.”
→ This only says they endured hardships; it doesn’t prove the UK is a great place to live now. Neutral or slightly negative.
B. “There was only a marginal change in the overall health of the population.”
→ Suggests stability, but “marginal change” is not clearly positive — it could be slightly worse. Weak reinforcement.
C. “The percentage of British people declaring being very satisfied with their lives increased from 63% to 64%.”
→ A direct positive change in life satisfaction , supports OECD’s claim.
D. “People’s stress levels did not soar as it happened in Greece and Chile.”
→ Suggests UK fared better than some countries, but doesn’t directly prove it’s one of the best.
E. “Life satisfaction and confidence in institutions did not decline since 2007.”
→ This is quite strong: it shows resilience in both personal well-being and trust in institutions, which supports the OECD’s positive assessment.

Best reinforcement:
Between C and E, E is stronger because it covers both life satisfaction and confidence in institutions, showing broader quality-of-life stability.
