A teacher decided to challenge 10 of her students to do their mathematics work without a calculator or computer for three months, while the rest of her class was able to use whatever tools they had at their disposal. She discovered that the 10 students’ scores improved on their homework assignments and their exams. On the basis of this experiment the teacher determined that students perform better when forced to complete their work manually rather than depending on machines.

Which of the following would, if valid, most weaken the reasoning above?

(A) The 10 students were performing poorly in the teacher’s course before the experiment.

(B) The 10 students were being tutored by other students who did have the advantage of a calculator or computer.

(C) The 10 students happened to be the best students at mathematics in the class.

(D) During the three months of the experiment, the class studied mathematics that only the 10 students had studied previously.

(E) The teacher coached the students on how to do their homework without the help of a calculator or computer.

Define the scope of the argument in your mind before proceeding to the options.

10 students were asked to drop machines for 3 months.
Their scores improved (compared to their previous scores).

Conclusion: students perform better when forced to complete their work manually rather than depending on machines.

What would weaken that manual calculations was the reason for improvement? If we found some other reason for improvement, then our conclusion would weaken. Note that that reason needs to have played a role in the last 3 months only. The students improved their grades in the last 3 months. Something must have happened in the last 3 months to make them improve their grades.

(A) The 10 students were performing poorly in the teacher’s course before the experiment.

This does not weaken the argument. It does help that manual effort leads to better grades.

(B) The 10 students were being tutored by other students who did have the advantage of a calculator or computer.

Were they being tutored during the last 3 months only? We are not given. Hence this is not a point of distinction between last 3 months and time before that. Then why did these students improve their grade in last 3 months only?

(C) The 10 students happened to be the best students at mathematics in the class.

Doesn't matter. They improved their own grades. Their competition is with themselves only. We are not given that they had the best grades in the class. What happened in the last 3 months is important.

(D) During the three months of the experiment, the class studied mathematics that only the 10 students had studied previously.

Correct. This helps. If in the last 3 months, these 10 students were studying what they already knew, this could be the reason for their improved grades.

(E) The teacher coached the students on how to do their homework without the help of a calculator or computer.

Irrelevant whether the teacher coached or they learned on their own.

Answer (D)
