Considering that Mark Twain is Samuel Clemens, I have always found it amazing that very few people know that Samuel Clemens was a writer, since almost everybody knows that Mark Twain was one.
Which one of the following, if true, would most effectively resolve the apparent paradox above?
(A) Most people probably have not read anything by Samuel Clemens.
(B) Everyone who knows that Samuel Clemens was a writer also knows that Mark Twain was one.
(C) Most people do not know that Mark Twain is Samuel Clemens.
(D) Many people believe apparently conflicting things about authors.
(E) Some people know that “Mark Twain” is a pseudonym for Samuel Clemens.
Which one of the following, if true, would most effectively resolve the apparent paradox above?

Samuel is the real name of Mark Twain.
But only a few people know about Samuel being a writer, while almost everybody knows that Mark Twain was a writer.
The paradox could be solved with:
(A) Most people probably have not read anything by Samuel Clemens. (Mark is Samuel's pseudonym. Samuel didn't write a book under his name) (illogical)
(B) Everyone who knows that Samuel Clemens was a writer also knows that Mark Twain was one. (this doesn't resolve the paradox, because this statement represents the majority of people should have been acquainting with Samuel if the majority of people know about Mark Twain) (Incorrect)
(C) Most people do not know that Mark Twain is Samuel Clemens. (Yes, this does resolve the paradox. Keep it aside)
(D) Many people believe conflicting things about authors. (nothing to do with people not knowing about Mark being Samuel) (Incorrect)
(E) Some people know that “Mark Twain” is a pseudonym for Samuel Clemens. (Some could be any number; plus, it doesn't represent why most people don't know about Samuel being Mark)
(C is a better choice)

Even though almost everybody knows that Mark Twain was a writer, almost no one knows that Samuel Clemens was one, even though Mark Twain is Samuel Clemens. To resolve the paradox, ask yourself why. Obviously, if few people knew that Mark Twain was Samuel Clemens in the first place, then no wonder they never heard of Samuel Clemens. Answer choice (C) allows both sides to be factually correct and provides a possible cause for the situation.
Answer choice (A): If the public has never read anything by Samuel Clemens, this might explain why very few people know that he was a writer. However, it is still unclear how they know about Mark Twain. This answer choice makes the discrepancy even more confusing and is therefore incorrect.
Answer choice (B): This answer choice only tells us that those who do know of Samuel Clemens also know of Mark Twain. This still doesn’t explain the pervasive absence of knowledge about Samuel Clemens.
