A small dose of widely used tranquilizer allows people to lie during lie detector tests without being discovered. The stress responses that lie detector tests measure can be inhibited by the drug without noticeable side effects. One of the implications of this fact is that the drug can also be effective in reducing stress in everyday situations.
An assumption of the passage is that
specific tranq use -> reduce a specific type stress -> lie detector can not measure stress
people are stressed -> use specific tranq ->
??? -> everyday stress reduced
??? should providide us with "reduce a specific type stress = reduce everyday stress"
(A) tranquilizers are always an effective treatment for stress
always = red flag + effectivness not mentioned
(B) the inhibition of stress responses increases subjective stress
out of scope
(C) stress as measured by a lie detector is similar to everyday stress
if this is true the same tranquillant, which reduce stress measured by lie detector, can also be used to reduce everyday stress since it produce the same effect
(D) persons who lie during a lie detector test always display signs of stress
always = red flag + this is not what we are looking for.
(E) it is not desirable to reduce stress in everyday situations
out of scope
