To strengthen the claim, we have to select the answer choice that fits well.
Scientists claim that these strains of diseases were simply not properly diagnosed fifty years ago.
Option E tells a reason to believe the claim. If the same pesticides were used 50 years ago, there are great chances for the stains of disease in the consumers 50 years ago but couldn't be diagnosed that time.

Eliminate answer choices that do not strengthen the argument. Choices B and C have nothing to do with pesticides or misdiagnosis. Choice A does not disprove the scientists' claim, nor does D.  Choice E is the best answer  because it essentially supports the notion that the crops were treated with the same types of pesticides fifty years ago, which would lead to people contracting the same types of diseases from the consumption of these crops.

Why is D wrong ....Statement E claims similar but not same so how can we be sure those pesticides used 50 years ago were as detrimental as today's. Example, Pepsi and Coke are similar but no same, as one could claim that Coca Cola at its beginnings used coke as one of the main ingredients which was later banned yet Pepsi never used coke thus this one main ingredient one could claim has its effects on health. Thus coke and pepsi are similar but not same.

Opt D indicates that people who were misdiagnosed eventually received accurate diagnoses. This would imply that the diseases did exist but were not correctly identified at the time which supports the scientists claim.
