'C' does not seem right.

The idea that "Most people would bet on the tiger", is itself not refuted rather it has been established that these people are wrong. Thats why, "C" does not seem right.

Kindly correct me!

I agree with you.

The first boldface sentence expresses a reality, a fact, which is TRUE in the short term. A tiger would beat a man in the short term. It is true, in fact, also for the passage: "Such prediction, while true in the short term...."

This sentence is not argued, but the argument presents another way to see this statement: in the long term, it is the human to beat the tiger.

I don't believe that "the first is an instance of a belief that is refuted in the argument" because it is not refuted.

IMO, C doesn't have to seem correct to be the correct answer choice. Every other answer choice has some sort of definition or wording that makes it untrue. Here's how I got it correct confidently on the first try:

I'm going to bold the words that make the answer choice false/incorrect.

A. The first is an opinion that is refuted in the argument; the second is an opinion that the argument believes will be true.

- the second is not an opinion. It's an example provided to support the opinion that "the weaker entity has out-innovated the stronger entity in the long term, compensating for its weakness."
Cross answer choice out.

B. The first is an example provided to increase the belief in a strategy; the second is competing strategy that refutes that example

- the second is not a competeing strategy. To put it in their own words, the second boldface is an example to provide support for the strategy that "the weaker entity has out-innovated the stronger entity in the long term, compensating for its weakness."
Cross answer choice out.

C. The first is an instance of a belief that is refuted in the argument, the second is an instance provided to support a competing belief.

CORRECT - "In a fight between man and tiger, most people would bet on the tiger" is a belief. The author also disagrees with it. "the triumph of man over tiger in which man invented weapons to defeat the tiger, almost wiping it out from the face of the planet." This is an example that supports the competing belief that "the weaker entity has out-innovated the stronger entity in the long term, compensating for its weakness"

D. The first is evidence whose accuracy is disputed in the argument; the second is another evidence that disputes the first.

- the second boldface's purpose is not to dispute the claim that the stronger entity wins. The second bolface's purpose is to provide support for the claim that "the weaker entity has out-innovated the stronger entity in the long term, compensating for its weakness."
Cross answer choice out.

E. The first is evidence that has been used to support a position that the author expresses reservations about; the second is a competing position that the author agrees with.

- This one is the toughest to eliminate. The second boldface is not a competeing position because.... you guessed it... the second bolface's purpose is to provide support for the claim that "the weaker entity has out-innovated the stronger entity in the long term, compensating for its weakness."
Cross answer choice out.
