Haley: There is no point in pursuing a four-year college degree. From all the research I have done so far, it is quite evident that all that you actually need to know in your career after college can be learnt in about a year. Mostly, it is the on-job learning that matters. Take the example of Kelly who did only a few accounting courses from the community college and she is now hired by an airline company for a permanent accounting job.

Jess: But when I spoke to Kelly, she told me that although on-job learning is important, one also needs a strong theoretical base. Surely, spending four years in college is important.

Jess most seriously weakens Haley's argument by doing which one of the following?

a. Indicating that Kelly's achievements are overemphasized by Haley

b. Challenging Haley's core reasoning against spending four years in college

c. Arguing in circles, without any substantive evidence

d. Suggesting that Haley's argument lacks evidence

e. Using her personal relation with Kelly to counter Haley's argument

Jess most seriously weakens Haley's argument by doing option (b): Challenging Haley's core reasoning against spending four years in college.

By stating that Kelly, who only did a few accounting courses from the community college, mentioned the importance of a strong theoretical base, Jess challenges Haley's claim that all that is needed can be learned in about a year. Jess introduces the idea that on-the-job learning is important, but a solid theoretical foundation, which is typically gained through a four-year college degree, is also crucial for success in a career.

This counterargument weakens Haley's argument by highlighting the potential limitations of relying solely on a short-term education without the broader knowledge and skills obtained through a four-year college program.
