OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

The whale-hunting industry has been around for many years, and is part of the fishing tradition of several countries. However, an end should be put to this industry's operations since __________.

(A) the countries that hunt whales are limited by an annual quota.

Incorrect.

This is a "Complete the Argument" format question. The missing argument part follows the reason conjunction since, so it's a premise, which supports the conclusion. Therefore, this is a Conclusion Strengthening question:

Premise: whale-hunting is an old tradition belonging to several countries
    =
Contradicting Conclusion: whale-hunting must be stopped

    Strengthening Data: ?

You are required to complete the argument with data that supports the conclusion.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion and therefore cannot logically complete the argument. In this statement, we are told that the countries hunting whales are restricted, and can't kill whales whenever they want to. Therefore, it underminesthe idea that the industry needs to be stopped since it gives us a reason to believe that authorities are controlling the number of whales being killed.

(B) all old traditions should be preserved and continued.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion and therefore cannot logically complete the argument. If old traditions should be maintained then so should whale-hunting, which is an old tradition according to the first premise.

(C) whale-hunting, like any industry, creates employment and foreign currency.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion and therefore cannot logically complete the argument. Stating that whale-hunting provides people with jobs and strengthens the economy only makes us think that closing the industry would be an unwise thing to do.

(D) whale-hunters might mistakenly kill whales of endangered species.

This answer choice strengthens the conclusion and therefore logically completes the argument. It provides a good reason for stopping whale-hunting - it may save endangered species from extinction.

(E) the whale population figures have not shown vulnerability in the last four years.

If the whale population is not suffering, as shown by this statement, then the plea to stop hunting becomes less relevant.
