Birthday Clown: At any party where I perform, my costume consists of two pieces of attire: a tweed jacket and suspenders. One piece of the costume is monochromatic, but the other is mixed and consists of either two or three colors. If the jacket is monochrome, the suspenders have exactly two colors. If the suspenders are monochrome, then the jacket has exactly three colors. I always make sure that the jacket and the suspenders share exactly one color.

Which of the following must be true, on the basis of the statements above?

A) The costume must not contain exactly four colors.
B) The costume must not contain exactly three colors.
C) The costume must not contain exactly two colors.
D) The tweed jacket must be monochromatic.
E) The suspenders must be monochromatic.

JACKET -----------------------------SUSPENDER
1 COLOUR ---------------------------2 COLOUR -> 1 COLOUR NEED TO COMMON (CASE1)
3 COLOUR----------------------------1 COLOUR -> 1 COLOUR NEED TO COMMON (CASE2)

A) The costume must not contain exactly four colors.
See the Case 1 and case 2 in no circumstance there would be 4 color, check case2 one color has to be common. So, in case2 also, there would be max 3 color. So costume must not contain exactly four colors, this is true.
B) The costume must not contain exactly three colors.
See in the case 2, costume can have three colors, so this is wrong.
C) The costume must not contain exactly two colors.
see in the case 1, costume can have two colors, so this is wrong.
D) The tweed jacket must be monochromatic.
See in the case 2, tweed jacket can have 3 colors also, so this is wrong.
E) The suspenders must be monochromatic.
See in the case 1, suspender can have 2 colors also, so this is wrong.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

Solution: A

In this Inference question, consider the logic of the clown’s statements. One of the two pieces of attire has one color. The other piece of attire shares that color and has either one or two other colors. So the costume as a whole must have either two or three distinct colors, and (A) is the best answer choice.
