I got C. Which is right but I'm wondering why A isn't right. Is it because the professor's statement is very absolute. So A where the statement is comparing chances and not being absolute enough is not right.

D also is very absolute but I caught that course is not the same as test. You can fail the test but can still pass the course

I marked the answer as A but didn't get why is it wrong. Can someone explain.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION



"If you don't study well for the following test, you are sure to fail", said the professor to his students. "Only those of you who study for at least 10 hours have a chance of passing."

Which of the following can best be inferred, based on the professor's statements ?


(A) Anyone who studies for more than ten hours has more of a chance of passing the test than those who study for fewer than ten hours.

Incorrect.

This is an Inference Question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a conclusion stemming from those premises, or in other words, to take one small step forward and draw a conclusion:

    Premise A: Those who don't study well for the test are going to fail it.
    +
    Premise B: Those who study for at least 10 hours have a chance of passing it.
    =
    Conclusion: ?

It is still possible for someone (a chimp, for example) to study for more than 10 hours for the test and still have a zero chance of success, much like someone who has studied for fewer than 10 hours. Thus, this conclusion goes too far from the premises stated.


(B) No number of hours will suffice to ensure a passing grade.

Incorrect.

We are told nothing about what number of studying hours would ensure a passing grade. Therefore, any inference on that matter is unfounded by the premises. No need to go that far; one small step is all you need.


(C) If someone does not want to fail the test, he or she had better study for at least ten hours.

If only those who study for at least 10 hours have a chance of passing (premise B) and you do not want to fail, you should study for at least that amount of time.


(D) Those who don't study for at least 10 hours will surely fail the course.

Incorrect.

This is an Inference Question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a conclusion stemming from those premises, or in other words, to take one small step forward and draw a conclusion:

    Premise A: Those who don't study well for the test are going to fail it.
    +
    Premise B: Those who study for at least 10 hours have a chance of passing it.
    =
    Conclusion: ?

Those who don't study for 10 hours will surely fail the test, but we have no information as to the achievements necessary for passing the course. Therefore, we cannot draw such a conclusion.


(E) The professor's course is one of the harder courses of that year.

Incorrect.

Though the professor's requirements sound frightening, the other professors may be worse. As always with Inference Questions, we have to choose the conclusion based on the information we have and an additional small step - we cannot make any assumptions!

One doubt here
a) if you study > 10 hours ---> might pass

this implies

if you don't pass --> then you haven't studied more than 10 hours. If we take don't fail -->more than 10 hours of study, then isn't it violating the basis conditions of A causes B then B doesn't A can strengthen it or can be inferred by it. Please help @buneal
