OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Before the National Opera performs before a live audience, it practices for up to six months. The rigorous practice by the singers, the chorus, and the orchestra, both individually and as a cohesive unit, ensures there are as few mistakes as possible.

Which of the following inferences is best supported by the statements made above?

A. If the singers, the chorus, and the orchestra practice relentlessly, both individually and as a cohesive unit, for six full months, they perform flawlessly.

Incorrect.

This is an Inference Question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a conclusion stemming from those premises, or in other words, to take one small step forward and draw a conclusion:

Premise A: The National Opera practices for up to 6 months before the opening night.
    +
Premise B: The practice, both individually and as a group, ensures there are as few mistakes as possible.
    =
    Conclusion: ?

There is a very long distance between performing with relatively few mistakes and the ability to possibly perform flawlessly. This answer choice suggests a leap, we are looking for a small step forward.

B. If it fails to prepare adequately, the National Opera is likely to make more mistakes.

If the National opera practices for up to six months (Premise A) to make as few mistakes as possible (Premise B), it follows that if they don't they're likely to make more mistakes.

C. If the National Opera does not prepare seriously they are liable to perform very poorly.

We don't know what will happen if the National Opera doesn't prepare seriously. We can make a conservative assessment, but "liable to perform very poorly" is too much of a guess. Remember, we are only looking for a small step forward.

D. It is more important for the different parts of the National Opera to practice together; the separate practice stage is merely a preliminary one.

Incorrect.

We are told nothing of the relative importance of the two stages of practice, so any inference on the relative importance of the two stages would be unfounded.

E. Opera plays an important part in the cultural life of the whole city and is therefore not to be taken lightly by the ensemble.

Incorrect.

This answer choice is out of scope of the argument, since the argument tells us nothing of the importance of opera. Remember, we are looking for a small step forward.
