Curator: Without question this sculpture that Mr. Rodianov has proposed to donate to the museum is an accurate replica of the famous Egyptian Boat of the Dead, but despite its remarkable fidelity and its high artistic merit, our museum must decline the donation.

We need to find a way in which, if true, restrict the museum to accept the donation.

Consider option, C. The museum currently faces a severe shortage of storage space which completely aligns with our presumption.

Answer: C.

1. We are given the curator's decision: "Curator: Without question this sculpture that Mr. Rodianov has proposed to donate to the museum is an accurate replica of the famous Egyptian Boat of the Dead, but despite its remarkable fidelity and its high artistic merit, our museum must decline the donation". Now we need a statement to help explain the curator’s decision to decline the donation of the replica sculpture.

2. Rodianov has already donated a number of replicas to the museum. This is irrelevant since it's not mentioned in the text and it doesn't seem as a reasonable explanation. So, this statement doesn't help explain the decision.

3. The curator does not have sole authority to accept or decline public donations. If this were to be true, then the curator wouldn't be confident that the donation will be declined. So, this statement doesn't help explain the decision.

4. The museum currently faces a severe shortage of storage space. Here, even though it isn't mentioned in the text, it sounds like a reasonable explanation. So, this statement does help explain the decision.

5. The museum is not located in Egypt. The donation is related to Egypt but is not from there, also it doesn't seem reasonable to deny the sculpture for this. So, this statement doesn't help explain the decision.

6. The curator and Rodianov are famously on bad terms. This is irrelevant and it's not mentioned that only the curator takes part in the decision. So, this statement doesn't help explain the decision.

Which of the following, if true, would best explain the curator’s decision to decline the donation of the replica sculpture?

A. Rodianov has already donated a number of replicas to the museum.

B. The curator does not have sole authority to accept or decline public donations.

C. The museum currently faces a severe shortage of storage space.

D. The museum is not located in Egypt.

E. The curator and Rodianov are famously on bad terms.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

Solution: C

This is a pretty clearcut Explain the Paradox question: find a reason that the museum – not the curator – would have to decline the donation. If the museum hasn’t got any storage space, they might not have a place to put the donation now (if it wouldn’t be immediately exhibited) or later (if it were taken off display).
