One of the most notorious performance-enhancing drugs is stanozolol, an anabolic steroid found in many dietary supplements used by athletes and bodybuilders. Because of the drug’s notoriety, the governing bodies of all major sports competitions routinely test for its presence in athletes’ bloodstreams and consider it a banned substance. LMG, a new exercise supplement, is promoted to athletes as being completely free of stanozolol. For this reason, athletes whose only dietary supplement is LMG do not have to worry about testing positive for stanozolol.

E. LMG is not currently considered a banned substance by the governing bodies of major sports competitions.

If the above statement is not true then it would not be promoted to athletes by the governing bodies of all major sports.

Answer: E.

Option E: LMG is not currently considered a banned substance by the governing bodies of major sports competitions.
I think for option E to be the answer it is missing the word "all"

On the other hand option B seems to be a good choice "Stanozolol is not naturally present in foods commonly consumed by athletes" because if the opposite of this is true they will be tested positive irrespective of the LMG

Conclusion is athletes whose only dietary supplement is LMG do not have to worry about testing positive for stanozolol.

Thus if conclusion needs to be true only assumption which fits is option C i.e., stanozol is not present in other foods which are consumed by athletes

Which of the following is an assumption required by the argument above?

A. LMG does not contain any anabolic steroids other than stanozolol that are detectable in athletes’ bloodstreams.
B. Despite not including stanozolol, LMG is as effective a dietary supplement as others favored by athletes.
C. Stanozolol is not naturally present in foods commonly consumed by athletes.
D. LMG does not lead to dangerous side effects.
E. LMG is not currently considered a banned substance by the governing bodies of major sports competitions.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

As always with assumption questions, you should pay particular attention to the conclusion of the argument, which is that "athletes whose only dietary supplement is LMG do not have to worry about testing positive for stanozolol." Notice the specificity here: the conclusion states that users do not have to worry about testing positive for stanozolol, specifically, not performance-enhancing drugs in general. And this is for users whose only dietary supplement is LMG, but that allows for means other than dietary supplements as ways for people to consume stanozolol.

For this reason, answer choice C is correct: what if stanozolol occurs naturally in an athlete's food? That would mean that she can still test positive even if LMG is her only dietary supplement. So C needs to be true in order for the conclusion to hold.

Choice A is incorrect because of that specificity in the conclusion. If A were not true, then athletes might test positive for a different anabolic steroid. But the conclusion is not concerned with other steroids: it specifically says that athletes will not test positive for stanozolol, so every other steroid falls outside the scope of the specific conclusion.

Choices B, D, and E are all incorrect for similar reasons. They provide additional reasons that an athlete might want to take LMG (it's effective, it's not dangerous, it's not banned) but none of these reasons are specific to the conclusion, which is only concerned with testing positive for stanozolol.
